One of the results of the assumption of power by the Roman Church was the denial of freedom of individual thought and the instrument designed to enforce this was the inquisition. it is impossible to tell how many people died under this system whilst it ruled without any organised opposition, but it is estimted that it was many times more than those who died under the earlier persecution by again pagan Rome
during this same period there were endless wars in Europe as rival claims to thrones tried to establish themselves plague and pestilence followed in the wake of the wars it is estimated that the black death took about a quarter of the population of Europe

During this period the Roman Empire is afflicted with insurrection many of its emperors, died by violence murdered or assassinated.
The thunder of insurrection that developed in these events cleared the way for a change in human affairs
